Skye

February 23, 2007

The Isle of Skye.  Dr. Johnson & Mr Boswell spent over 80 days on Skye in 1773, I on the other hand could allow myself only a few hours.  While still an island, the bridge over Loch Alsh opened in 1992 allowing for much easier access to & from the island.  I must come back.

Eilean Donan Castle

February 23, 2007

Not far from Plockton is the town of Dornie and it’s famous castle.  The original castle began in the 1300’s and stood guard over the Kintail area of Scotland until destroyed in 1719.  A Lt. Col. John MacRae-Gilstrap purchased the island in 1911 a for the next 20 years he rebuilt the castle.

Plockton Inn

February 23, 2007

Lousy picture.  Great Inn!  I love this place.  If you recall, when I headed to Plockton my only possessions were in my backpack, the rest somewhere in Continental’s baggage system.  I needed a fresh shirt so I asked if they had a gift area where I could purchase one.  The lass gave me that look, […]

Highland Music

February 22, 2007

Whilst planning my trip to Plockton, I went on the web to see if I might meet someone from the area to chat with, maybe share a meal, someone to help me learn the place.  I wasn’t hopeful as I was looking on the edge of nowhere, but I found  a woman to whom I […]

Harbour Street, Plockton

February 21, 2007

Plockton.  You might already know of it if you have ever seen the Wickerman (1972) with Edward Woodward, Christopher Lee and Britt Ekland (Oh my!) or the TV show Hamish McBeth with Robert Carlyle shown from 1995 to 97.   I’m sure that anyone who thinks of a wee Scottish Highland village forms an image […]

Palm Trees

February 19, 2007

North of Moscow Plockton is.  That’s what I saw as I looked at the globe in my den.  I had been planning my next trip almost since my return in 2005.  That trip was less than I hoped for and this one was going to be much better.  Just like the trip to Loch […]

Parliament

July 5, 2005

This has to be one of the funkiest major government buildings in the world.  Like many people, I can’t decide if it is bizarre or cool.  Once I got over the initial shock, I settled on cool. So that wraps up an abbreviated trip.  Whist in the air on July 7 terrorist blew up buses […]

The Way Down

July 3, 2005

I headed down on the easy path and came across St. Anthony’s Chapel.  The view to Calton Hill across Holyrood Park shows an oasis in the city.  Like New Yorks’s Central Park and Boston Gardens. The zoom on my Kodak is amazing.

The View from the Top

July 3, 2005

The next time I go to Edinburgh I’ll take a map up to Arthur’s Seat and put things together.  The view is everywhere and grand.  The city sits like a model and every landmark seems to be as on a cartographer’s drawing table.  A lunch and a bottle of water and a few pleasant hours […]
