Kirkwall, Orkney

Look up South Ronaldsay. I’ve taken remote a step further. I was worried upon arrival as everything was locked and 3 hours before check in. But the proprietor arrived and set me up with a coffee and chat. Now off to the big city! Kirkwall. Three more islands btw.

The bigger islands are connected by causeways so a bus not a ferry was required for this trip. As I crossed one I could see the hulk of a ship sunk in WWII to block German subs.  I’m guessing the these waters are a divers paradise with all the sunken ships/

St Magnus’ Cathedral, the most northernly in the UK, was begun around 1130.

I find it interesting that no one has ever found a horned Viking helm as apparently they didn’t wear them.

Adjacent to the Cathedral are two other large piles.

Kirkwall boasts a very nice local museum down one of it’s winding streets.  I love the hooded Orkney chair. A very comfy seat. Often a drawer is under the seat and is where the man of the hoose would have kept his glass and whisky bottle. The curved hood protects against drafts and noises from the bairns

A good hour until the next bus and this pub is what made that hour good!
