Bantem Lake, Litchfield CT

by WBlackwell on March 19, 2018

One doesn’t have to wander too far afield to find something interesting, get a little exercise and enjoy a friends company.  Mike Garrity took us an a wee road trip from New Milford, CT to the White Memorial Conservation area. Bantem Lake is the largest natural body of water in CT.  Candlestick Lake, whilst much larger, like Ma.’s Quabbin Reservoir, it is man-made.

And at the point we were standing we can see the remaining supports for the 1000’/305m conveyor belt that would drag the 300# blocks of ice to the ice house, a 700′ x 125′ double, insulated walled building capable of holding 56,000tons of ice.

Stopped at the Bantem Market on the way home and I was so impressed by the vegetable display that we didn’t disturb it.
