A walk in the park, a castle and an abbey

by WBlackwell on November 19, 2019

Time to see the  town so after an 800 calorie full English breakfast, I decided to walk it off.  That will take about 6 miles.  The Quarry Park takes up nearly 30 acres in the city bordered by the loop of the River Severn across from this church.  Mandatory memorial to the dead of the world wars

Fom a distance I thought I was seeing a memorial to Satan.  More like St.Mike

When Roger de Montgomery, a close counselor to the Conqueror, built a wooden castle on this site in 1070 it added to the protection offered by the River Severn which forms a huge horseshoe around Shrewsbury. The current version is the work of Thomas Telford.  And before the time of cannon this arblaster was a crossbow firing huge bolts.

Some guy named Darwin was born here

Founded in 1083 the abbey has gone through many changes from it’s Saxon chapel original

This pulpit had been inside one variation of the church

A view of the Severn from The English Bridge.  This was part of Telford’s road from London to Holyhead

A quick visit to the Gallery with it’s Tudor ceiling

In 1636 Petrus Troueil painted Sir Francis Ottely & family.  Jemma Pearson made the statue of Shrewsbury native Admiral Benbow.  The town is raising funds for a life-sized version.

A fine local traditional pub dating back to 1780
