I was aware that there where carvings exposing chalk in southern England but had never seen one. One the vegetation is scraped off the white chalk is exposed.  Some of these works of art, called hill figures, are very old some like this 1902 crown commemorating the coronation of Edward VII are newer.

After checking in I went to see some of the city

The other, more dramatic side of the cathedral is covered with scaffolding and I was not able to get inside, but it is fairly impressive

And you can’t go to Canterbury without thinking Of Geoffrey Chaucer

Gates and walls dating from the Romans pop up all over
