Porte d’Aix – Marseille, France

by WBlackwell on January 1, 2018

Porte d’Aix (also known as the Porte Royale) is a triumphal arch in marking the old entry point to the city on the road from Aix-en-Provence inspired by the Roman arches.  The Porte d’Aix was initially The classical design by Michel-Robert Penchaud conceived in 1784 to honor  Louis XIV and to commemorate the Peace of Paris in 1783 that ended the American War for independence.  It was eventually completed in 1839.

It was also only a few hundred steps from my hotel.
