St. Augustine and Thomas Becket

by WBlackwell on May 29, 2018

One more place I wanted to see before leaving Canterbury.  St Augustine founded the Catholic Church in England in 597, so a bit of history to ponder.  I’ll let you look up particulars but we can see that he was successful.

Sure the Abby is a pile now, but it is a 1400 year old pile.

Walking back through the city I passed a wee church, St Thomas of Canterbury Church, named for the saint slain in the adjacent Cathedral it is Catholic and houses some of his relics.  Thankfully not like St Oliver Plunkett!

With all the bones, like these of St Thomas’ finger, that the divers churches claim as as relics I often wonder how many fingers did saints have?  And considering how many churches have a piece of the “true Cross”, I wonder if that Holy rood was maybe 100′ long!
