The Festival Fringe

by WBlackwell on August 16, 2003

The Festival Fringe started in 1947 with the International Arts Festival.  Since it’s performers were not invited (unjuried) there was no selection committee.  It was an arts festival, but one on the fringe.  The statue mime and the street sweeper mime were typical.   The street sweeper reminded me of a desk statue I got from my grandpa Bill.  It showed a sweeper with cap & cigar and a legend “‘itler’s bloomin’ street sweeper, ‘at’s me”.  This bloke stayed perfectly still until there was a coin that needed to be swept into his bin.
