Bowness Boating

by WBlackwell on October 26, 2017

The whole point of visiting the Lake District is the lake.  Windermere is the largest lake in England and since I had walked so far yesterday and the weather was co-operating, I decided to go for a boat ride.

My guest house was only a little over a mile from the one in Windermere.  I had booked 2 nights but then decided I wanted to stay a couple more and the Oakfold was available.

Bowness is even more impressive than Windermere, if possible.  Lots of the same slate style buildings, this is a village that lives on the tourism business.  It being a school break week, it was jammed.

No, I didn’t visit the Beatrice Potter exhibition but the bairns were all over it

On the way to the waterfront I stopped in to St. Martins

There are many options if you want to get out on the water, kayaks, self-row like these, even self drive motorized ones but I opted for the larger tour boats that can take you out  on a 45 minute trip to the village of Ambleside and back after a couple hours wander there.

They sell bird food so the gulls waited patiently

But you had to watch your step navigating the geese, pigeons, ducks and swan.  The walkway was naturally covered with guano!

With all the rain there are occasionally huge storms that result in flooding as you can see.

And this ship can hold over 500 passengers which would, to me, ruin the whole experience which, with just a few passengers was very tranquil

The views were grand.

I debarked in Ambleside and well, went for an amble. Like other Lake District towns this too is geared for the tourist shopper.  All the same outdoor gear shops, restaurants and jewelry seen in most Lake District towns. And yes the sun was beginning to peak out.

The Bridge House is one of the village’s most historic buildings

St. Mary’s Ambleside is a of the Church of England and it’s stone spire is both stunning and unique.

And it was retreating glaciers that scooped out this valley

I could only make out the fellwalkers on the top of this hill when they moved, just below the word “top’.

And we saw RAF fighters doing chases at very low altitudes.  When I looked at this photo later I realized there is a jet on the right just leaving the shaded area near the right.  If you are wondering why this photo is larger, it is because photos take up a lot of data space so for the most part I keep them small so as not to get flack from the domain house, but sometimes larger is not only bette but necessary.

And the absolute last thing I expected to see, and which is difficult to capture in a pic was this drone.  I have no idea who controlled it or where it came from.  It was suddenly just there hovering overhead.
