Glasgow Botanic Gardens, again

by WBlackwell on June 11, 2018

After the Hunterian I headed to the Botanic garden.  The best thing about a Botanic is they change with the season so you never see the same thing twice. I never want to be in a city with one and miss it.  I’ve been here 3 times.

Ruth – Giovanni Ciniselli

Antonio Rossetti – The Nubian Slave

William G John – The Elf

John Wood – The Sisters of Bethany

The inventor William Kibble was a Victorian entrepreneur and eccentric. He dabbled in many things winning medals for his photographs using a camera, lenses and glass plates so huge they had to be moved around on a horse and cart. He was the only man ever to have bicycled across Loch Long on floats! Kibble Palace is a 19th-century wrought iron framed glasshouse, covering 2137 m2. Originally designed for John Kibble by architects James Boucher and James Cousland for his home at Coulport on Loch Long in the 1860s.  I must check out the home the could have had this on site.  Eventually brought up the River Clyde by barge to the Botanic Gardens, it was fully erected at its current location in 1873.

William Thornycroft’s Stepping Stones

Scipione Tavolini – Eve

Edwin Mullins – Cain or “My Punishment is greater than I can Bear”

George Pauline – Robert of Sicily

Upon leaving the Gardens I decided to still along the River Kelvin where the water level seems low.

DO NOT TOUCH THIS PLANT!! Giant Hogweed is both invasive and painful.  The oils cause rates and temporary blindness accompanied by serve pain.  I am told as I have not yet had the pleasure of touching it.  If it looks remotely like what American’s call Queen Anne’s Lace I steer clear.

The Roberts Memorial sits upon a commanding hilltop in KelvinGardens.

Offering great views of Glasgow
