Llandudno, Wales

by WBlackwell on November 7, 2017

Another seaside town with a great beach area, pier, 75’/23m wide promenade and an active high street.  Welsh is a tough language.  By that I mean impossible with a lot of guttural sounds.  The first man I met upon leaving the Whitehouse Hotel, which is on the promenade and quite nice and price for the off season, chatted a bit and thanked me for my card.  “Thank you very much “sounded to me like: “Da Elk ana vowelk”.  I asked a young couple who looked like they had been out walking for the 3 things I should do in town.  1. Go to Castle Conwy, 2. Climb an Orme (there is a Little one  141m/465′) and Great Orme at 207m/680′ 3. Go to the Staffordshire Shortcake Shop.  Greater Orme has a tram that wasn’t running, a copper mine that’s closed and is more developed than Little Orme.  The shortcake shop was closed although I had a nice chat with Sue, the owner and the castle will be tomorrow.

The pier at 2295’/700m is the longest in Wales and was opened in 1888

Lewis Carroll took holidays in Llandudno and met Alice Liddell there his inspiration for Alice in Wonderland.  There are a number of wood sculptures to honor that.  Her are a few.

Unfortunately this church was not open as I expected the inside to be even better than the outside

The only other place I’ve seen an outdoor clock like this was on Bute.

And on the side of Great Orme I spotted sheep and wondered why were they eating there?  Because they were  mountain goats!

This hotel was very cool

And the town is pronounce “Klandoodno” Yep, LL is Kl.

That’s Little Orme and a target for the day after tomorrow

5.04 miles
