Two Castles, One Day Part 2- Caernarfon Castle

by WBlackwell on November 7, 2017

Back on the bus to Bangor to transfer to the one taking me to Caenarfon.  Since I had a few minutes before the next bus I walked a bit if the town center stopping off at the cathedral.

A site of Christian worship since 525 AD, it has been often destroyed and rebuilt.  The origins of the current structure are from the 13th century. Not much to look at on a grey day from the outside, luckily for me this time the church was open.

I knew I wouldn’t have more than a couple of hours to wander about when I got to the second Castle, but felt it would be enough time. And besides the legs may fail before the early darkness sets in.  I would climb over a dozen turrets by days end and at least 1000 circular steps than then have to be walked down.

As part of his Ring of Iron Edward I had this one built in 1283 -1330 replacing a  motte-and-bailey one from the 11th century that had stood on grounds fortified by the Romans who left in 5 AD.

By the time I had arrived at Caernarfon the mooring drizzle had let up and the sun broke through lighting the place nicely.

The Royal Welch Fusiliers Museum is housed within the Castle.

It looks like my gamble might work. I saw the weather forecast with rainy today and clearer tomorrow so I opted for the 2 castles, as they often look better against cloudy skies and plan to do a nature walk tomorrow.
