Wick-ed

by WBlackwell on February 23, 2019

Aye, a wee grin as I enjoy the cheapest bottle of Paddy’s I’ve ever purchased out side of Duty Free!  Considering the remoteness of my location in Orkney I was surprised.  I carry a metal liter bottle, lighter than glass and can’t break so I’ll transfer in the AM.  I often wonder what housekeeping thinks when cleaning up after a bloke who has only been there 2 nights leaves an empty liter!

St. Margaret’s to Gills Bay on the catamaran. Only an hour crossing so the ferry doesn’t get up to potential speed. Bus to Wick. Two hours wait for train to Thurso then on to Dingwall. From there in a couple days I hope to get to Ullapool. Then to Lewis.

Since I have to kill some time in Wick I walked to the Heritage Center. It’s closed this time of year but the question I was to ask was answered outside the building.

James Wares is my maternal great, great grandfather.

About 30 of these pollution free turbines near Wick. I believe that the energy generated goes into the national grid. I was told in Orkney renewables generate 130% of what the islands use. I’m not sure if areas that generate pay any less. And here comes the rain!

Memory lapse.  Thurso rail station?

The firth full of oil rigs let me know Inverness was nigh.

I like Dingwall. Easy walking unless you want to climb.  Good shops and good views.  Nice hotel. No WIFI?
